PDF Broadway Musicals

Book description

The concept is simple: Filichia writes essays about the biggest hit musical and the biggest flop of each year from 1959-2009. Not only are the essays entertaining and full of all kinds of interesting tidbits, but he does a good job of changing the angle he takes as he goes so the book doesn't become too redundant. In the process, he doesn't just tell the story of the particular shows, but identifies the trends that have affected musical theater over the years. He's not afraid to be opinionated, taking on overrated favorites like The Producers. One minor gripe: I wish that the book would have listed the other shows of each season, hits, break-even shows, and flops, so that as a reader I could have engaged in second-guessing the author a little more, and also put other shows that were not at the top or the bottom into the timeline.
