PDF The Three Billy Goats Gruff

Book description

Have read this book to preschoolers. I have mixed feelings about this classic. I understand it's a classic. But I don't like some of the messages that it sends. I get that it's a kid's book. But it promotes violence in response to problems. Younger kids outwit bully by using their wits - I like that. But then the biggest brother responds with violence - I don't like that. If you live or work in a tough neighborhood (as I do) - that sends the wrong message to kids. It says that it's okay to beat someone up who is threatening you. We already deal with enough violence and homicides - I don't fault this author, I just don't like the story itself. I wish the original story had taken a different approach at the end.

That being said, this story could be used as a discussion point with children on ways to handle conflict and better ways to resolve fights than resorting to violence. Yes, even in preschool this is a problem. Some versions of this book are more violent than others, in some books the biggest brother is dressed differently. The troll looks different also. I like the illustrations in this particular edition.

Taken from different perspectives, it can be used in different ways. I do feel that books that promote discussion on "life topics" for preschoolers are good to use, even when the topics are difficult.

I've seen some great reviews overall of Galdone's work, so I will have to check out more of his books as I am looking for more children's books to add to my resource library.
